An Indian festival of Lights, observed during the span of Autumn/Fall. Associated with Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity, and marks the beginning of the financial year in India
One of most auspicious festivals of Hinduism, it symbolizes the Victory of Light over Darkness, Positivity over Negativity, and that of Good over Evil. It is also associated with the worshiping of Goddess Lakshmi, The Goddess of Prosperity. Folks dress up in their newly bought attires, lit Diyas (Earthen Pot Lamps), renovate & redecorate their homes in preparation of the occasion. Preparation of various Sweet ‘n Savory Dishes; Gujiyas, Kaju Katlis Namkins & Jamuns to name a few. Exchange of Present n Gifts with near & dear ones are gestures of Love, affection & appreciation during the festival.
The Festivities start with Dhanteras, (aka, Dhantrayodashi) wherein purchasing Gold/ Silver Ornaments and/or Coins is considered auspicious, for inviting Good Luck & Wealth to ones abode.
Decoration of the house includes Rangolis, (Artistic Designs made of Rice Flour n Herbal Colors mixed together) often adorned with Flowers.
On the Night of Diwali, Fireworks of various kinds are lit of to mark Joviality n auspiciousness of the Festival. People often visit their relatives/kins’ places to celebrate together, & spread joy. This festival ends with the adorable tradition of Bhaiya-Dooj (Bhai Fonta) , wherein Sisters pray for the Long Life & Good Health of their Brothers.
So, here’s wishing everyone celebrating, a very happy prosperous & fun filled Diwali & BhaiDooj. May all your dreams n wishes come true. Spread Love Happiness & Laughter.
